Having a website is a must for pretty much any business. But, there is more to it than just having a great website – you need a web hosting provider you can depend on to keep your website up and running safely, efficiently and effectively. Contrary to what one might think, not all web host providers are the same.

When It comes to selecting a web hosting provider, there are several things you need to keep in mind. After all, the best provider is one experienced in providing features such as scanning for malware, updating and monitoring WordPress and plugins, having a dependable website loading speed, provide backup services, and of course, have technical support you can count on.

Types of Web Host Providers

Before choosing a web host provider, it is important to understand the types of web hosts available. After all, not all providers are the same. This list is not exhaustive, but most hosting providers offers services that fall into one or several of these categories:

  1. Free Hosting – This might seem appealing as it does not incur a hit to your budget. However, it should be noted that you will have severely limited bandwidth, minimal storage space, and will likely be limited in the size of the files you can load.  In addition, you cannot expect them to maintain website features or security and you will not be able to have a customize domain name.
  2. Shared Hosting  This is an inexpensive approach to web host providing as the server is shared by you and several other companies. It allows you to have your own domain name, plenty of functionality, and server upkeep is not your responsibility. However, one of the most important qualities to this approach is that security levels are generally high, so you can depend on your website content being secure from hackers.
  3. Dedicated Hosting – A definite step up from sharing, but it also costs more. Plus you are responsible for server upkeep unless you pay extra for “managed” services. It is typically a better choice for larger companies/corporations. This option also has higher security measures and levels of performance.
  4. Virtual Private Servers  (VPS)– This is in-between a shared and a dedicated server. A virtual private server may only have a handful of sites hosted on it, so there’s less sites that could impact others, plus the memory and disk space is better protected from sites on the same server as a shared server.

There are many key factors to look for when choosing a web host provider, but some of them include the following:

  • Security expertise and proactive monitoring
  • Reliability in uptime, and a service level agreement that guarantees everything from response time to replacement of hardware and compensation for any downtime.
  • Support that is ready to help you when you need it

When you select a web host provider you need one you can depend on to have your back. Look for one that will back up your data, regularly scan for malware and take time to check that all your plugins for your WordPress site are up to date so that being hacked is not as much of a concern. Each of these offerings are vital to having a reliable web host for your company site.
